Language requirement (MALD)

Cultural sensitivity and multilingual competence are cornerstones of careers in international affairs. For students enrolling as of Fall 2025, demonstrating proficiency in more than one language will be a graduation requirement for the MALD degree.

Students have several avenues to meet this requirement, ensuring it is accessible and achievable. Completion of at least one of the following four options is required for the MALD degree:

    • Certification of reading and speaking ability through language exams provided by Fletcher via Language Testing International (LTI).
    • Exams are available in multiple languages, with one reading and one oral test free of charge for Fletcher students. A retest for each is also financially supported.
    • Fulfillment of the requirement is achieved by scoring at least Level 2: Limited Working Proficiency on the ILR scale in both reading and oral exams in the same language.
    • Exams are conducted online with remote proctoring. Reading exams are multiple choice; oral exams involve either a computerized avatar (OPIc) or a live tester (OPI).
    • Successful completion of two semesters of intermediate-level or above language instruction for credit at Tufts University or Harvard University, achieving a third-year language level.
    • Courses may be taken for a letter grade or pass/fail, with a minimum grade of B- required.
    • Up to 8.0 credits (two full-semester courses) can be taken as electives, with a maximum of 4.0 credits per term.
    • Students may also audit one language course per semester to refresh skills or start learning a new language, though these do not appear on the transcript or count towards the requirement.
    • Successful completion of two or more semesters of intermediate-level or above language instruction for credit at another institution within five years before enrolling at Fletcher.
    • An official transcript is required.
    • Evidence of a prior undergraduate degree (lasting at least three years) or graduate degree (lasting at least two years) where the primary language of instruction was not English.
    • An official transcript or certification letter is required.
