Navigating New Horizons: From Literature to Global Media
John Greco F88
John Greco's interest in international affairs took root during his undergraduate years at Boston College. As an English major, he participated in an exchange program at the University of East Anglia in the UK, where he explored British literature and culture. His travels also led him to Belfast, Ireland, during the Troubles of the early 1980s. Witnessing the complexities of conflict firsthand sparked his curiosity about social and political change on a global scale, marking the start of his transformative journey.
Discovering Fletcher: Guided by a Mentor
During his senior year, John learned about The Fletcher School through the BC Honors Program. Under the guidance of his mentor, Dr. Larry Barton (F ’79), he delved into a thesis exploring the impact of Radio Free Europe during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. Barton's encouragement and shared interests pushed John to pursue further studies at The Fletcher School, despite his initial hesitation.
Professor Scott Thompson recognized John’s passion for documentary television. In this second year, John went on the annual Washington Career Trip. Prof. Thompson encouraged John to meet with John Marks at PBS. What started as an informational interview led to a job offer on the groundbreaking program 'Common Security'. This marked the beginning of John's career as a producer, propelling him into the world of media just after graduation.
A Global Outlook: Leading the Way in Media
John's career gained momentum as he transitioned from roles at PBS to positions at major networks like NBC and Discovery, Inc. Today, as a principal and executive producer at Leeway Productions, he continues to shape the media landscape with projects spanning a variety of platforms. From Hedrick Smith Productions to his documentary “Thinking Money” about behavioral economics, to PBS’ “Religion & Ethics Newsweekly”, John's portfolio reflects his commitment to purposeful storytelling.
In addition to his work in the US, John's influence extends internationally as an executive producer for London-based New Media News TV Limited. His dedication to fostering international dialogue through media underscores his commitment to bridging cultural divides and promoting global connectivity.
John Greco's journey from literature to global media exemplifies the power of curiosity, mentorship, and seizing opportunities. As he continues to navigate the dynamic world of international affairs, his story serves as an inspiration for aspiring changemakers worldwide.
