In 2021, Mr. Sharma was appointed President of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and negotiated the Glasgow Climate Pact. COP26, held in the fall of 2021, brought global leaders together to accelerate the work that needs to be done to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN framework on climate change. Read here Fletcher experts' commentary on and contributions at COP26.
Mr. Sharma was born in India and moved to the United Kingdom at a young age. After earning a BSc in Applied Physics with Electronics in 1988 from the University of Salford, he began his career in finance as a charted accountant working for Deloitte Haskins & Sells. He later worked as a financial advisor for Nikko Securities and then for Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken.
After his career in finance, Mr. Sharma followed in his father’s footsteps and moved into the political arena as a conservative candidate Member of Parliament in 2010. Mr. Sharma was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 2016 to 2017.
Mr. Sharma has also served as Minister of State for Housing for former Prime Minister Theresa May, and later, Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed him as Secretary of State for International Development. Mr. Sharma was then promoted to Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy.
The Fletcher School is honored to host Mr. Sharma at this critical juncture, following the release of the most recent IPCC report.
