A Journey of Exploration and Service

Lloyd Ocean, F25, follows path to Fletcher through military service and law
Lloyd Ocean

For Lloyd Ocean, F25, the path to international relations has roots in both personal history and professional exploration. Growing up as the child of Jamaican immigrants in an immigrant-rich community, Lloyd’s understanding of the world was shaped by family connections across the U.S., the U.K., and Canada. Reflecting on these influences, Lloyd explains, “Being part of an immigrant community and knowing my family lived in different countries opened my eyes to the broader world.”

After starting out on a business track as an undergrad, Lloyd went on to spend two years with Ernst & Young but soon realized his interests leaned more toward policy and law. This led him to the U.S. Army, where he could build new skills, connect with others, and experience the world. During his nine-year service, Lloyd’s defining moment came when he was deployed to Kuwait, acting as a liaison between his unit and the Kuwaiti government. “Leading business operations in a foreign setting, learning policies of another country, and building connections—these experiences were fascinating to me,” he shares.

After returning to the U.S., Lloyd followed his initial career plan, working in New York as a lawyer at Goodwin Procter LLP and later in Rhode Island government doing prosecution, civil enforcement, and appellate work. But his early interest in international affairs pulled him back. “I came full circle to what had originally inspired me,” Lloyd says. “Fletcher allowed me to connect my varied experiences and build toward a future in international relations.”

Finding a Community at Fletcher

Lloyd’s choice of Fletcher was driven by his unique combination of professional interests. With his military and legal background, he was drawn to the intersection of federal and state government policy, economics, and international affairs. Through conversations with faculty, students, and alumni, he recognized Fletcher as a rare environment where his interests would not only be accepted but actively explored.

“Fletcher stands apart because it’s a place where everyone has their own intense interests,” Lloyd says. “You can feel it in the hallways and hear it in conversations. The joy of exploring your passions is everywhere.” He continues, “It becomes clear that when you graduate from Fletcher, you leave a changed person because your mind has been broadened about the pathways you can take to make an impact in the world.”

Engaging with Faculty

At Fletcher, Lloyd’s relationships with faculty have deepened his academic experience. Beyond the classroom, he’s found professors who recognize and value his own expertise, creating opportunities that align with his interests and career goals. “I’m currently working with a faculty member to develop part of a book on a topic I’m passionate about,” Lloyd says, “and because of my background, another professor even asked me to give a guest lecture.” These opportunities, he notes, feel organic—an outcome of shared interests and the diverse experiences each student brings.

Seeing Fletcher Behind the Scenes

Lloyd’s work in Fletcher’s executive office has given him a unique perspective on the school’s commitment to student experience. “I see how faculty and staff are incredibly thoughtful about supporting students,” he explains. “Whether it’s helping with specific issues or going above and beyond to improve the Fletcher experience, they’re always focused on doing what’s best for us.” This attention to detail, Lloyd feels, enhances the strong sense of community and support that defines Fletcher.

A Unique Academic Hub in Boston

Having spent time in New York City and Washington, D.C., Lloyd appreciates Fletcher’s distinct location in Boston. “Someone told me Massachusetts is the ‘Athens of America,’ and I see it,” Lloyd shares with a smile. “With around 44 universities within 50 miles, there’s always a fascinating lecture or visiting speaker nearby, whether here at Fletcher, on the Tufts campus, or a quick subway ride away at Harvard or MIT.”

For Lloyd, Boston offers a balanced environment where he can fully focus on his studies and personal development. “I can always visit New York or D.C., but studying here allows us to bring our whole selves, develop at our own pace, and make real, genuine connections,” he says. “It’s a haven for growth, and I love it.”
