The Dr. Maurice S. Segal Lecture Series was established in 1973 to address issues of global importance to Tufts University. This lecture series embodies Dr. Segal’s philanthropic mission to bring distinguished speakers to campus, with an emphasis on global issues, in collaboration with The Fletcher School and Tufts University School of Medicine.
Dr. Maurice S. Segal was a professor emeritus at Tufts University School of Medicine and a prominent researcher of lung disease. Dr. Segal established the Tufts Lung Station in 1946, one of the nation’s first centers for respiratory care and research. In 1980, Dr. Segal created The Effects of Pollution on the Quality of Life in Developing Nations Fund, aimed at raising awareness through lectures pertaining to the effects of atmospheric and environmental changes on world health.
The legacy of Dr. Segal’s lecture series has brought distinguished speakers to Tufts University such as Stephen Hadley, President George W. Bush’s National Security Advisor; Muhtar Kent, former president, and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company; Eric Lander, president and founding director of the Broad Institute; Atul Gawande, noted surgeon and author; and Dr. Richard Haass, noted diplomat and president of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Dr. Segal’s generosity continues to significantly impact students and faculty at Tufts and the Medford/Somerville community through thoughtful and engaging dialogue centered on finding tangible solutions to address the world’s most pressing issues.
