Transfer Credit
Fletcher students bring distinctive experiences to their programs. Transfer credits may be accepted for the following programs:
- Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) and Master of International Business (MIB): A maximum of four courses may be transferred for credit. Students may submit a CSAP petition for transfer credit, which should be done as early as possible in their Fletcher careers.
- Master of Global Business Administration (GBA): Students may petition for up to nine credits of transfer credit, which may be applied to elective courses only.
- Dual-degree Candidates: No more than the equivalent of four courses (including cross-registered courses taken while enrolled at Fletcher) may be transferred toward MALD degree requirements. The only exception to the four-course limit applies to official participants in Fletcher’s degree programs with the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna and the University of St. Gallen.
- Dual degree candidates should not take courses intended for transfer credit during the same semester they intend to graduate from Fletcher. Due to differences in academic calendars, final grades and official transcripts for these courses may not reach the Registrar’s Office in time for degree approval. Additionally, dual degree students should be aware that transferred courses may not fulfill breadth requirements.
Transfer credit is not an option for students in the Master in Global Affairs (MGA), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Laws in International Law (LLM), and Global Master of Arts Program (GMAP) programs.
Students should submit a CSAP petition at least three months prior to the semester in which they plan to reduce their enrollment. This allows the Registrar’s Office to accurately manage the student’s future enrollment and tuition charges. Students who reduce their enrollment after the start of the term will be subject to the University refund policy.
Petitions for transfer credit will be reviewed if all of the following criteria are met:
- The course was taken at an accredited graduate school and is comparable to Fletcher course offerings
- The student was registered as a graduate student at the time the coursework was completed
- The grade received is a grade of B- or better, and an official transcript is submitted
- A course description, reading list, or bibliography is provided
- The course is evaluated and approved by a Fletcher faculty member who teaches in the relevant area
- The student provides a strong justification for the course’s relevance to their Fletcher academic program
- The courses were not used toward a prior degree
- If requesting transfer credit for multiple courses, all courses and supporting material must be submitted as a complete package
- Online courses may be considered with faculty approval
Transfer credit approved by CSAP will not appear on the Fletcher transcript until an official transcript is received.
Cross-Registration
Fletcher has cross-registration agreements only with Tufts University and the Harvard University graduate schools. There are no cross-registration agreements with other universities in the Boston area.
All cross-registered courses must be graduate-level courses. Students may take up to 25% of their courses at Tufts or Harvard while enrolled at Fletcher. Full-time students may take no more than the equivalent of 6.0 Fletcher course credits at Tufts or Harvard in a single semester.
Beginning fall 2025 students may enroll in a maximum of one full semester course (the equivalent of 3.0 Fletcher Credits at Harvard), per eligible semester. Fletcher students cross-registering at Harvard must remain in full-time status at Fletcher by registering for a minimum of 9 credits at Fletcher.
- For Two-Year Programs: Cross-Registration is limited to the second and third semester. No cross-registration may take place in a student’s first or final semester.
- For One-Year Programs: Cross-registration is limited to the first semester. No cross-registration may take place in a student’s final semester.
- For the Academic Year 2025-2026 registration in Winter term (sometimes called January Term or J-Term) the difference in schedules may not allow for students to cross-register.
Students may not audit Tufts or Harvard graduate courses. Students interested in auditing a Tufts language course should contact the Registrar's office for guidance.
Cross-registration for courses at Tufts University is completed online through SIS. Students should follow the steps outlined by the SIS team when cross-registering. Be sure to keep a spot open in your SIS record sothe cross-registered course can be automatically added once approved by the Tufts professor and the AS&E Registrar’s Office (Dowling Hall). As a precaution, students may unofficially follow a back-up Fletcher course.
Please remember to follow the host school’s instructions regardingcourse admittance and any additional forms. Remember to obtain a copy of the host school’s academic calendar as dates may differ from Fletcher’s. Also review the final exam schedule to avoid conflicts with Fletcher final exams.
Before cross-registering in a Harvard course, please review and understand all cross-registration policies. It is tjhe student’s responsibility to be familar with these policies prior to cross-registering.
Please check each Harvard school’s website for cross-registration enrollment dates. There is no pre-registration for Harvard courses. Each school normally gives priority to its own students. Always register for a back-up Fletcher course, which you may later drop if admitted to your Harvard course. A Harvard instructor’s approval does not guarantee enrollment in a Harvard course. Some courses have required fees for access to articles and specific software. These fees are not always well advertised so please contact the relevant Harvard Registrar’s Office if you are concerned about additional costs..
Note: Harvard Business School courses include a course materials fee - typically $100 for 1.5 credit courses and $200 for 3.0 credit courses (though fees are subject to change). Students are responsible for paying these fees directly.
Please closely review the Harvard cross-registration instructions below and visit the My.Harvard cross-registration portal to set up a Harvard key. If you already have a Harvard ID (HUID), the Harvard Key will sync to it. If this is your first time cross-registering, a new HUID will be created.. Validate your Harvard Key through the confirmation email sent by Harvard IT.. Use your Harvard Key to access your course enrollment page atmy.harvard.edu. You must follow this process each semester, even if you previously set up a Harvard Key.
For questions about cross-registration dates or course details, please contact the appropriate Harvard Registrar’s Office.
For technical issues, contact myharvard_support@harvard.edu. If the issue persists, contact the Harvard Registrar’s Office and included a screenshot of the error message.
All courses taken during the winter term will be counted toward the spring term – no exceptions.
Current students, please visit MyFletcher for additional details.
