Fletcher alumnus served as Under Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Treasury
The Fletcher School is honored to announce that Jay Shambaugh, F97, former Under Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Treasury, will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Convocation ceremony.
Shambaugh has had three positions in public service. From 2022 to 2025, he served as Under Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Treasury. He served as a Member of the White House Council of Economic Advisors from 2015-2017. Earlier, he served on the staff of the Council of Economic Advisors as a senior economist for International Economics and then as the Chief Economist. He also spent three years as the director of the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution. He is also a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
Shambaugh is currently a professor of economics and international affairs at The George Washington University. His main area of research is macroeconomics and international economics. His work includes analysis of the interaction of exchange rate regimes with monetary policy, capital flows, and trade flows, as well as studies of international reserves holdings, country balance sheet exchange rate exposure, the cross-country impact of fiscal policy, the crisis in the euro area, the U.S.- China economic relationship, and regional growth disparities.
Prior to joining the faculty at George Washington, Shambaugh taught at Georgetown University and Dartmouth College and was a visiting scholar at the International Monetary Fund. Shambaugh received his PhD in economics from the University of California at Berkeley, an MA from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, and a BA from Yale University.
Fletcher is delighted to welcome Dr. Shambaugh back to campus as our keynote for this important ceremony to start the AY2027 academic year. His leadership and commitment to public service will undoubtedly inspire our graduates as they prepare to make their own impact in the world of international affairs.
