On April 5, 2023, The Fletcher School will host the U.S. Department of State to honor the recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Public Diplomacy. The award will be presented to Foreign Service Officer, Daniel Langenkamp, for his “exceptional performance in the United States’ public diplomacy and strategic communications efforts before and during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

Mr. Langenkamp has served the Department of State for two decades and at six international posts. At the time of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he was spokesperson and press attaché for the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, working for the next several months at the Poland-Ukraine border with a small team of diplomats who did not evacuate to the U.S.

Prior to his Ukraine tour, Langenkamp served at posts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Uganda, Vietnam, and Cote d'Ivoire. In Washington, D.C., he was head of public affairs for the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, worked on the Turkey and NATO desks, and served in the Department of State Operations Center.

Langenkamp holds a BA from Columbia University (1992) and a MALD degree from Fletcher (2002). Before joining the Foreign Service, he worked at the International Rescue Committee, at the International Organization for Migration, and as a Peace Corps volunteer in Hungary. He credits his dedication to public affairs to foundational experiences earned during his time as a reporter, including for Reuters, The Boston Globe, and The Christian Science Monitor.

Joining the event will be Elizabeth M. Allen, Senior Official for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. Allen was previously a partner at Finsbury Glover Hering and served as Deputy Communications Director to President Barack Obama.

The event is co-sponsored by The Murrow Center for Global Diplomacy and The Institute for Business in the Global Context. It will feature a discussion titled “Public Diplomacy on a Digital Planet: The View from Kyiv.” The program includes a conversation between Daniel Langenkamp and Tara Sonenshine, followed by a discussion with Bhaskar Chakravorti. Sonenshine is Fletcher’s Edward R. Murrow Professor of Practice in Public Diplomacy, and Chakravorti is Fletcher’s Dean of Global Business.

The event is open to the public and will begin at 12PM on April 5. Attendees are encouraged to register in advance. For those who cannot attend in person, a livestream option will be available.
