Biography

Why Fletcher?
I came to Fletcher thinking I would be changing careers, and hoped to take lessons learned in the military and apply them to other career fields not specifically focused on national security. I was able to accomplish just this by completing an internship at Bank of America in Diversity & Inclusion through their Human Resources Development Program (which I learned about through a Fletcher grad!). However, after all the coursework I've done here, the connections I've made, and the opportunity to reflect, I've come to the realization that the work I truly love is in that national security milieu—it's just completely different than what I did before. I had not heard of security sector reform, or the Women, Peace, and Security agenda before coming to Fletcher. I now work on gender in the military, both as a Reservist and through my research and publishing. Furthermore, the broad flexibility of the curriculum and the engagement of the faculty has allowed me to work as a reserve NATO Gender Advisor while being a student—both my coursework and military duty feed one another. Fletcher is directly responsible for showing me an entire world within the national security space where I feel like I am making an impact, and love what I do.

How Fletcher has broadened your global perspective
At my last job in the Navy, I was a troop commander within the Special Operations community, and had a role in integrating women into previously all-male units. Since I came to Fletcher, I realized very quickly that my existing knowledge and skills on gender integration were acquired and applied in a relatively homogenous group, and that there are a wide variety of factors that I would need to consider in order to be relevant in other environments. I hope to use my time at Fletcher to develop a functional specialty in gender equality consulting that can be employed across sectors, from increasing political participation of marginalized populations, to getting more women on corporate boards.
