On choosing Fletcher

I would like to work for an international organization, like the United Nations or the World Bank in the fields of disaster risk management and human security. With so many Fletcher alumni working for international organizations, Fletcher seemed like a great fit! I chose Fletcher because of its very friendly atmosphere. When I visited Fletcher as a prospective student, even before I applied to graduate school, two Fletcher students willingly showed me around the campus. What surprised me the most was that, walking inside Fletcher buildings, we ran into many other students started friendly conversations. Even though I had visited some other top-notch schools, Fletcher was the only place where I experienced this. I also was able to have lunch, coffee and dinner with different students while engaging in very interesting conversations, audit four different classes, and attend the information session. From this experience, I found that Fletcher has an outstandingly close-knit community, consisting of warm and brilliant students, as well as very eager and sophisticated professors. Now, as a real Fletcher student, I have already found that my experience and impression above is real and accurate and I’m working to make the most of my time at The Fletcher School.

On favorite classes

I love my classroom experiences at Fletcher very much. One of my favorite classes is "Strategic Management" taught by Professor Bhaskar Chakravorti. This is discussion-oriented class explores actual business cases, as well as making full use of management theories like Porter's Five Forces, and students' previous working experiences in various fields. Thanks to the professor's ample experiences in business and academic fields, he is able to facilitate class discussions in a way which makes them more lively, interesting and meaningful. Another my favorite class is "Development Aid" taught by Professor Elke Jahns-Harms. She also has abundant experiences from all around the world. She is very passionate about her fields, very energetic in teaching, and very good at encouraging us to both theoretically and practically contemplate controversial topics such as "participation", "capacity building", and "conditionality", so that her class is always vibrant. Last but not least, both professors, as well as other professors at The Fletcher School, are eager for us to sign up for their office hours whenever we want. This accessibility to faculty also sets Fletcher apart.
