On the MALD Program
The two-year duration of the MALD program really allows you to gain deep theoretical knowledge and gives you the chance to apply your skills in a real-life work experience over the summer. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to discover new academic fields that you may not have considered before. You will want to dive deep into research for your capstone and develop relationships with your professors and classmates alike. Even though it can be hard to adjust to the rhythm of school after a few years of work experience, the school will help you set yourself up for success and you will realize that these two years were one of the wisest choices you could have made.
What does the flexibility of the curriculum allow you to do?
Climate change and international environmental policy are my passions and I plan to pursue a career in these fields after graduation. Nevertheless, I think that defense and security issues are extremely important, and any serious diplomat or politician should have advanced understanding of these issues. The flexibility of the curriculum at Fletcher allows me to pursue both fields of study and strengthen my theoretical knowledge, while also improving soft skills such as public speaking. Additionally, the school has cross-registration agreements with all Harvard and Tufts graduate schools, which presents a great opportunity to enlarge your social circle and study subjects that are not covered at Fletcher. For me, this has been a political campaign management class taught at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
On the Office of Career Services
The Office of Career Services at Fletcher is an outstanding resource for current students and alumni alike. The whole team works incredibly hard to craft the best tools and make sure we are prepared to face the professional challenges that lie ahead. The program starts in the summer with some webinars and continues with weekly lectures during the first half of the fall semester. It covers basic questions from how to write a cover letter and present your CV to more advanced issues such as LinkedIn, elevator pitches, and networking skills. Almost every week, events are organized with different organizations, guest speakers and employers, but also alumni who share their professional experiences and recommendations on how to approach the job market.
