On the interdisciplinary nature of the program

At the beginning of my first semester, I was surprised how I was drawn to classes that were exceedingly varied in subject matter. I completed courses from many different fields of study and was concerned that my interests were too broad. However, the content of most classes overlapped. As a result, I have been able to provide varied perspectives in each of my classes. I have also been able to meet fellow students from distinct and inspiring backgrounds. When I am sitting in class and turn to my left, I see a cardiologist from Saudi Arabia, and to my right, I see a lawyer for the Israel Defense Forces. I am humbled to be studying with and learning from accomplished individuals from all over the world in addition to the distinguished Fletcher faculty. I believe this is the perfect experience and preparation for me to work as a well-rounded Foreign Service Officer as a Pickering Fellow.

On the Fletcher family

My experience at Fletcher so far has taught me that the world is much more interconnected than I had previously thought. I believe that institutions like Fletcher have greatly contributed to the interconnectedness of our world today. In looking at the demographics of the Fletcher student body, it is incredible to see how representative it is of the world. Even though I was aware of this diversity, experiencing this international community firsthand continues to inspire me, as I become a contributing member of the Fletcher community inside and outside of the walls of campus. Recently, I managed to get a ticket in the last row of a panel discussion at the Harvard Kennedy School, which included the former Colombian President. A fellow Fletcher classmate was in the front, caught my eye, and motioned for me to come to the front. I was able to sit two rows away from the President of the country I had been living in for the past two years as a Fulbright Scholar. Small gestures like these happen all the time at Fletcher and I anticipate they will continue to occur post-graduation, regardless of where I may be in the world. Fletcher students are interested in having timeless and meaningful relationships with their classmates and faculty, which I think is making the world a smaller, more inclusive place.
