the MALD
The MALD program has everything for someone like myself. I love exploring legal studies, but I was not willing to pursue a law degree as it does not align with my career choices. I am very much interested in Diplomatic and Negotiation Studies. At the same time, my previous experiences have been in humanitarian programs which specifically focus on human rights issues. The MALD is a perfect match for me because I can specialize in two different fields. This program also gives me the opportunity to improve my communication and analytical skills for public policy and negotiation, as well as to learn more about the reforms and frameworks of international law and organizations. While at Fletcher, my focus will be International Security and Diplomatic studies, but surely I will also be exploring coursework in Human Rights and International Law. I am so pleased that the flexibility of the MALD degree allows me to explore all of my areas of interests.
On a favorite class
This semester my favorite courses are "Actors in Global Governance" with Professor Ian Johnstone and "Role of Force in International Relations" with Professor Richard Shultz. In Professor Johnstone's course, we are learning about the global actors that shape today's international political arena. We then examine international organizations and produce a reform report on one of the organizations. In Role of Force, students are exposed to the theories and policies that involve the role that force plays in international politics. In this course active military fellows lead the discussion groups on a weekly basis. The two days war game simulation called SIMULEX really amazed me. The scenario of the year's simulation was to address the tensions with North Korea. I played the role of a diplomat from one of the participating countries, and this was one of the best learning opportunities at Fletcher so far. Both of these classes encourage students to utilize study groups. I found these study groups to be a very useful part of my experience at Fletcher. They have allowed me to learn from the different perspectives that my classmates bring with them to Fletcher.
