Why I chose the MIB
The MIB program was the perfect fit for my professional goals in impact investing, finance, and social impact. I came to Fletcher having worked in a range of environments, including economic consulting in the Bay Area, a Vietnamese bank in Ho Chi Minh City and finally a NYC-based community development financial nonprofit. I had a pretty clear idea of where I wanted to go and how Fletcher would help me reach my goals. From the 'Business for Social Impact' field of study to the Fletcher Social Investment Group (FSIG), there are countless offerings at Fletcher to explore my interests, as well as a community of like-minded students, alumni, and faculty who are similarly committed to social impact. Equally important, I felt strongly that Fletcher would be a great cultural fit for me. The people here are so down-to-earth, but at the same time incredibly smart and hardworking, and it's a truly collaborative environment.
On the rich classroom experience
One of my favorite classes has been Market Approaches to Development with Professor Kim Wilson. It is a 12-person, seminar-style class that is heavily student-driven. Among a range of topics, we discuss how social enterprises use business concepts to create financial sustainability, and there are prominent ethics and social justice components to the class, which I value highly. For example, in one class we discussed the merits and controversies to an NGO's efforts to build a sustainable supply chain in a South Asian country by partnering with a large multinational company and having low-income women sell that company's products, which include a skin-lightening cream that perpetuates discriminatory societal ideas and practices. Underpinning all of the experiences at Fletcher, both inside and outside the classroom, is the extraordinary diversity of the student body. It makes for lively discussions and an incredibly rich learning environment!
