On the MIB
I'd known for years that I wanted to get a graduate degree at some point, but I was enjoying different career challenges and kept deciding to wait. As I grew my interest in social enterprise and strategy, I was torn between pursuing a classic MBA or a more interdisciplinary program that would combine international affairs and business. Fletcher provided the perfect mix of solid business fundamentals housed within an international affairs school. I knew that I'd be surrounded by classmates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives and professors with real-world experience as well. I also liked the idea of being in a place like the Boston area with lots of innovation and entrepreneurial dynamism, where I could explore different interests off campus as well.
The MIB is really unique – it's small, so our cohort is super tight-knit, and it meshes serious business fundamentals with the flexibility of a range of international affairs classes, so you can build a curriculum that's tailored to your interests while having the support of a close peer group. I was looking for a rigorous but collaborative academic environment, which made the MIB a good fit for me.
On the Fletcher community
I've been so happy to be surrounded by such smart, engaged and interesting people here. I think a lot of us talk about being intimidated by the intelligence and experiences of our classmates. The cool thing I've seen is that, because we're all coming from different perspectives and planning to go in different directions, there's a major spirit of collaboration and sharing. Students take time for fun and really dig in to contribute both socially and intellectually to the community. I didn't think that I'd be meeting with my corporate finance group twice or more a week to crank out cash flow projections, but nor did I think that in between discussions of how to cost overhead that we'd be sharing stories of our families, travels, donuts, and helping each other keep calm and learn. It's at once both a lot more work and a lot more fun than I expected.
