Enrollment in summer session courses does not imply acceptance as a degree candidate in The Fletcher School. Students interested in applying to The Fletcher School should consult the Office of Admissions.

Summer Session Calendar

Classes begin on Monday, May 19. Classes end on Thursday, June 26. Friday, June 27 is set aside for exams or the completion of papers or other assignments.

How much does it cost?

Tuition is $2,850 per course, for both degree candidates of The Fletcher School and non-Fletcher students. Fletcher degree candidates are limited to taking one course at this reduced rate over the duration of their Fletcher studies, and thus, Fletcher students who have already taken a course in a prior summer at the reduced rate, pay the regular course charge for 2008-09 of 1/8 of the full tuition($4200). A nonrefundable $200 deposit per course, which will be credited toward tuition, is required upon notice of admission. Individuals who are not degree candidates of The Fletcher School may also audit courses at the rate of $1,425 per audit. Tuition is payable in full by May 1, 2008. No financial aid is available for the summer session.

Special Instructions for International Applicants

International applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). An exception to the TOEFL requirement will be granted only to non-native speaking English speakers who have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction. A score of 600 on the standard TOEFL or 250 on the Computer-based Test (CBT) or 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) is generally considered evidence of sufficient English language ability for graduate study at The Fletcher School. Applicants from abroad are urged to send their applications via facsimile transmission, or certified mail.

If you have been accepted into The Fletcher Summer School or a degree program at The Fletcher School, you must enter the United States as a student and you must apply for an F-1 visa at the American Consulate in your home country. In addition to your certification for funding for the academic year, you are required to certify sufficient funding for all summer school expenses by March 7, 2008, so that The Fletcher School can send you the required I-20 document needed to obtain your F-1 visa. Summer session funding should cover the tuition charge of $2,850 per course, living expenses of approximately $1,400 per month, and $600 for books and miscellaneous expenses. If accompanied by spouse and/or children, please provide funding in the amount of $400 per month for spouse, and $300 per month per child. All certification must be provided in U.S. dollars. If such certification is not provided to the International Student Advisor by March 7, The Fletcher School will be unable to issue an I-20 document. Please note that you must have applied and been accepted for the summer session before an I-20 document can be issued. Allow sufficient time to process your application, so that you can submit certification before the deadline. Although the deadline is March 7, 2008, please also bear in mind that in some countries visa processing times can be quite lengthy. Allow adequate time, based on conditions in your country, to obtain a visa. Certification should be sent directly to:

Carol Murphy, Assistant Registrar and International Student Advisor
The Fletcher School, Tufts University
Medford, MA 02155
Tel: (617) 627-3055
Fax: (617) 627-4028
Email: carol.murphy@tufts.edu

If you do not intend to request an I-20 document from The Fletcher School, please contact Carol Murphy, International Student Advisor. There are certain visa categories that you are not allowed to use for the purpose of attending school.

Refunds

After enrollment, refunds are as follows: 100 percent (less $200 non-refundable deposit) by 5:00 pm on Friday of the first week of classes (May 23, 2008); and none thereafter. All requests for refunds must be in writing and sent to the summer school director.

Housing

Housing for the summer school session for single students may be rented in Blakeley Hall, which adjoins The Fletcher School. The cost is $950. Housing costs must be paid in full no later than May 1, 2008 to the summer school director.

Blakeley Hall will be open from Monday, May 19 at 2pm until Saturday, June 28 at 2pm. Space is limited and will be assigned in order of receipt of payment. Meals and/or meal plans may be purchased through Tufts University Dining Services. Additional information on Blakeley Hall is available on the Blakeley website: http://fletcher.tufts.edu/blakeley/index.shtml.

Students admitted to the summer school wishing to live in Blakeley Hall should contact the Resident Directors of Blakeley Hall:

Cancellation of courses

The Fletcher School reserves the right to cancel a course that does not meet minimum enrollment requirements. Any tuition charges, including the $200 deposit, will be refunded if The Fletcher School cancels a course.

Auditing courses

Summer session students who are not enrolled in a degree program at The Fletcher School may audit courses at a rate of $1,425 per course. Audited courses may not be changed to credit status at a later date. If a student wishes to receive a transcript after auditing a course, s/he must let the professor know that s/he wants a grade of "Certified Audit" (CA); otherwise the audit will not appear on his/her record. Candidates for the Certificate in International Relations may not count audited courses toward the certificate. Degree candidates may audit a course at no charge, but should register for the course as an auditor with the summer school director.

Transcripts

Transcripts for summer session courses, whether taken for credit or certified audit, will be issued upon written request. Students may obtain transcripts at a charge of $2 per transcript from the Registrar's Office.

Transferring credit

Summer courses taught at The Fletcher School are also offered during the traditional academic year. Courses are taught either by full-time faculty or by adjunct faculty who have previously taught at Fletcher. It is our experience that credit for summer courses taken at The Fletcher School can be transferred to most other schools depending on that school's transfer credit policy.

Add/Drop

There is no add/drop period for the summer school. Students may withdraw from courses after May 19 subject to the refund policy described previously. No changes in enrollment status (i.e. credit to audit, or changes in course enrollments) may take place after May 30, 2008.

Honor code

Enrollment at The Fletcher School in the summer program obligates students to conduct all activities in accord with the rules and spirit of the school's honor code. A copy of the honor code is provided to all students with their letter of admission.

Certificate in International Relations Program

The certificate program is designed to help students and professionals remain current with advances in a rapidly changing field. The Fletcher School recognizes the highly specialized challenges of the expanding global marketplace and, through its Certificate in International Relations Program, seeks to enhance the international competence of its participants. The highly individualistic and flexible program allows a Certificate to be earned in as little as two summers, however, it does not need to be completed in that time. The School's Certificate in International Relations will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete four summer session courses. Audited courses may not be counted toward the Certificate requirements. Courses, which can be chosen from any or all three of the School's academic divisions, when taken together, can serve as a professional credential for those working in an increasingly complex and challenging global environment.
