Before studying at The Fletcher School, Tomoko Hayashi was an investment banker with the Mitsubishi Trust Bank for three years in Tokyo. Now she works for the Ministry of Health in Malawi. She credits Fletcher with making the transition possible.
“I had a very broad but not a definite idea of what exactly I wanted to do when I entered Fletcher,” said Hayashi, a technical advisor for monitoring and evaluation. "Following my heart, I chose classes and a summer internship to prepare me for a career in international development. The Fletcher degree allowed me to switch my career smoothly.”
The 2004 MALD graduate added: "A Fletcher degree is highly respected in the international development field. It got me my job, for sure.”
Hayashi’s undergraduate degree in Japan focused on international law.
While working in Malawi, Hayashi is also awaiting an assignment with the UN. She said she passed the UN Junior Professional Officer’s exam "with the tremendous help of Fletcher alums,” who offered advice on how to perform during the selective interview process.
Hayashi said the Fletcher alumni community has proven valuable in other respects. Before moving to Malawi, she spoke with two alums who used to work there. She also lives alongside two classmates.
