“I chose Fletcher in order to obtain a well-rounded background in international affairs. Fletcher's interdisciplinary focus is allowing me to focus on sustainable development and international negotiations to give me new insight into the political dynamics at work with global climate change and other environmental issues. The flexible curriculum is allowing me to get a broad understanding of the many elements of international relations, while at the same time specializing in my areas of interest. It's also enabling me to pursue an ad hoc joint degree with Columbia University's Earth Institute, thereby giving me both a science and policy background.”
“I've found that the Fletcher faculty has a unique mix of practical professional experience and academic credentials, coupled with a commitment to each student's success that extends well beyond the classroom. Classes are an interactive experience with engaging discussions interspersed with traditional lectures. I learn as much from my fellow students, since we each have such diverse sets of experiences and interests, as I do from my professors, which I think is how a graduate school experience should be. Fletcher has instilled the value of collaborating with peers since day one during orientation. Working with fellow students on class projects to tackle major global issues is rewarding, and it helps bring the already tight knit Fletcher community closer together.”
“During my first week here I was blown away by the diversity of the student body. Conversations went something like this:
Fletcher Student A: Where are you from?
Fletcher Student B: I'm from Zambia, by way of Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
Fletcher Student A: Oh, that's strange, because I lived in Zambia for two years while doing foreign aid work.
Fletcher Student C: Really? I was going to move to Zambia if I didn't get into grad school.
Me: I'm from Boston.”
“Some of my friends have lived and worked in Turkmenistan, China, Australia and, yes, Zambia. It's amazing to discuss their different perspectives on the world, and to use them to shape my own views on international relations.”
