2008-09 Student Profiles

Minta Madeley, MALD 2010, United States

On the classroom experience: My favorite class so far is Processes of International Negotiation. Almost every week, we break up into small groups to conduct negotiating simulations. The first couple of negotiations were really stressful, as we haggled over dollars and dates. However, as we all became more practiced at negotiation and began to see it as cooperation more than competition, my stress level went down and I began to really enjoy finding creative ways to come to an agreement.

How I plan to use my experience at Fletcher to make a difference in the world: After I graduate from Fletcher, I plan to work on conflict resolution in the Arab world. Fletcher is giving me the tools to look at conflict analytically and professionally, with an eye to precedent as well as emerging theory. The broad education I am receiving from Fletcher will enable me to competently and knowledgably look at conflict through many lenses, including political, cultural, economic and legal. I will use the skills and knowledge I have gained here to bring a new perspective and new energy to conflict resolution in the Middle East.
