The Fletcher School

A Graduate School of International Affairs

2008-09 Student Profiles

Thomas David McCarthy, PHD, United States

Why I chose Fletcher: I chose Fletcher after researching several other programs but finding none that match Fletcher’s focus on producing graduates with the tools and desire to change the world. Fletcher goes beyond the classroom by creating an environment for not only learning but also the application of new skills to real global problems that lack solutions. Every instructor I have met here sets an example by actively working outside of academia where they can apply their expertise on behalf of national and international efforts to increase national security, clarify world trade law, develop energy plans for the future, or address climate change.

On collaboration and teamwork: Fletcher’s emphasis on a well-rounded and diversified student body shows in the quality of classroom discussion and collaboration. Most students have worked and lived overseas before attending, meaning that each brings experience to the School—experience that allows each to frame and analyze contemporary issues and develop creative solutions. By offering a curriculum that encourages student participation in the classroom, and supplies countless opportunities to work closely on academic assignments, Fletcher leverages its diverse student body to provide peer-to-peer learning beyond the typical graduate school experience.
