Inside Out: Travels in Europe and North America

One of Fletcher's greatest strengths is the opportunity it gives each of us to reevaluate what we think we know from unfamiliar perspectives. Fletcher students from far abroad have the advantage of apprehending "Western" culture with a fresh eye, and it is this freshness that I have sought to attain in my photographs of people, places and things that might otherwise be overlooked because they seem ordinary to the casual observer to whom their contexts are already well-known. I am particularly interested in juxtapositions - especially of art and nature, signs and their significance, and people and their surroundings.

These photographs were taken over the course of journeys both long and short: to the Baltics in 2000; to the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and in Massachusetts in 2001; in the Cyclades; through the western regions of Canada and the United States; in the Netherlands and Belgium in 2003; and in Germany this past summer. I hope that you will find them both aesthetically interesting and thought-provoking, regardless whether their subjects are familiar to you.
