Image, Record and Art

A photo is a way to capture a moment in time, creating a tangible memory that one can convey to others. However, photography is more than a record of one’s experiences. Above all, it is an art form.

Photography is often overlooked as art because the photo is seen as recording the image and not creating it. The lack of control over the environment means that the world around us is constantly shifting: the sunset changes colors, the man walks out of view, the crowd disperses. In each moment there are infinite possibilities of photos to compose. Photographers make quick choices, both deliberate and random. They use composition, lighting and timing to make the ephemeral permanent. This is about the creation of the image, if not the moment.

As a traveler and a photographer, cameras can be a way to capture intimacy, engage with locals, re-enforce your status as an outsider, or pay homage to a beautiful scene. The end products can transmit the feeling of experiencing the journey, rather than viewing it. These photos are from travels in Morocco, Turkey, Southeast Asia, South Africa, Peru, and the United States. Thank you and enjoy.

Sarah Bailey is a second year MALD student who believes art is everywhere, travel is beautiful, and creation is a gift.
