Grandmother and Granddaughter
with Fruit
Calle San Jose, Paraguay 1996
James Patton
Doña Sefarina, caught in a candid moment out of her characteristic
joviality, sits like bedrock while her granddaughter clutches at the freshly
harvested wild fruit. The mood of the picture expresses some of the desperation
and resignation that I never saw in the interactions with or between the
poor, rural Paraguayans, rightfully known for their friendliness and hospitality.
