February 12, 2004 -  Kyodo News. The U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) has appointed Toshiyuki Niwa [Fletcher alum] a high-ranking United Nations Secretariat official, to the vacant post of deputy secretary general. He is the first Japanese to hold the post.

February 12, 2004 - Wall Street Journal contains a p. 1 story about Libya and the man expected to succeed Col. Gadhafi -- Shukri Ghanem [F '73]. Here is the Fletcher citation: "The other big player in Libya's future is prime minister Shukri Ghanem, who was called back from Europe two years ago to help repair Libya's failing economy. February 3, 2004 - Greek TV. Next week, a news magazine called "The Files," which airs on a major Greek network called Mega Channel, will have an hour-long [or 90 minute] profile of Constantine Karamanlis, PhD Fletcher graduate who may well be the next prime minister after the March 7 elections. Profs. Henrikson and Pfaltzgraff were each interviewed about what it was like to have Mr. Karamanlis as their student. The program is tentatively scheduled to run on Thursday, Feb. 12, beginning at 11:30 p.m. [Greek prime time starts later than U.S.]

February 3, 2004 - BBC Alan Henrikson was interviewed today about the Oval office meeting between President Bush and Kofi Annan re: agreement to send UN political experts to Baghdad in June.

January 29, 2004 - The New York Sun. Mary Robinson, former UN Human Rights Commissioner and an organizer of the conference in Durban three years ago, was recently hired as a professor by Columbia University's Department of International and Public Affairs. Her appointment is now stirring some controversy. [Nice reference to The Fletcher Forum which is cited in connection with the Durban conference.]

Called "Showstoppers," he lays out nine reasons why the United States never sent our Special Operations Forces already in place after al Qaeda before 9/11. The piece is based on his own research and newly declassified documents released by the Pentagon. Article

Alexander Thiers, who was a legal adviser to Afghanistan's judicial reform and constitutional commissions, has an op-ed today in which he argues that a "renegade" Supreme Court threatens that country's stability and democracy. [On Jan. 14, the judiciary declared a concert by an Afghan pop singer was "un-Islamic" and illegal.]

When Jamie Rubin spoke at Fletcher last Monday, he was trailed by CNN correspondent Jason Bellini to a profile being prepared for the Aaron Brown Show. Whether Rubin's appearance at Fletcher is in the story, we can't say. But the segment [always subject to change] is scheduled for tonight .

January 13, 2004 - On Monday, Jan. 13, the first in a series of news briefings, called "Tufts on Tuesdays," was arranged for professors from across the university to brief reporters on Iraq. It is part of a university-wide outreach effort to the media.

The professors who participated gathered at the Tufts' New England medical Center. They consisted of Antonia Chayes, Hurst Hannum, Leila Fawaz, Andrew Hess, Malik Mufti [poli. sci. dept.], Bill Moomaw, George Saperstein [Vet School] and Jeff Taliaferro [poli. sci. ]. The large panel was moderated by Steve Bosworth.

As part of this ambitious effort, there was a national telephone hookup allowing reporters from all over the country to call in and participate. Reporters from The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, The Christian Science Monitor, Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Arlington Access Cable showed. up.

January 2, 2004 - New York Times. While it is big news that Libya and the United States are inching their way to an agreement on nuclear weapons, the other news [admittedly not quite as big] is that Libya's prime minister Shukri Ghanim was interviewed by the NY Times last Friday which mentioned he received his PhD from Fletcher. According to The Times: "The prime minister, a leading reformer among Colonel Qaddafi's advisers, spoke in his large new office near the palm-studded waterfront of Tripoli's ancient harbor. A large portrait of Colonel Qaddafi looks out over the carpeted expanse of his work area. Mr. Ghanim, 61, spoke in the English that he perfected in the Boston area while he completed doctoral studies at The Fletcher School at Tufts University."
