The Fletcher School is proud to announce that Dean Stephen W. Bosworth has been named the United States’ special envoy on North Korea. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton officially announced Bosworth’s appointment at a press conference in Seoul on February 20th, following a meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung Hwanduring.
Bosworth brings decades of foreign policy experience to the position—one that he will hold while continuing his role as Dean of The Fletcher School.
Secretary Clinton remarked, “Ambassador Bosworth is up to the task of working
with our allies and partners to convince North Korea to become a constructive
part of the international community rather than a threat to its neighbors.”
Clinton went on to say, “[Stephen is] an experienced envoy able to interact with
officials at the highest levels of foreign governments ...this involvement will
facilitate a high-level engagement with the North Koreans and our other
partners.”
Prior to joining Fletcher in 2001, Bosworth served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. From 1995-1997, he was Executive Director of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization [KEDO], an inter-governmental organization established by the United States, South Korea, and Japan to promote peace and stability between the Koreas. He has held various senior positions in the State Department, including Director of Policy Planning, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic Affairs.
Bosworth’s appointment underscores The Fletcher School’s continued dedication to global thought-leadership and foreign affairs acumen. For 75 years, Fletcher has stood for excellence and ingenuity and has sought solutions to the world’s most pressing issues. We congratulate Dean Bosworth on his appointment and support his commitment to achieving peace on the Korean peninsula.
