The White House has announced President Bush intends to nominate William T. Monroe, of Virginia, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Kingdom of Bahrain. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Mr. Monroe currently serves as Deputy Chief of Mission in Pakistan. He previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Kuwait. Earlier in his career, Monroe served as an economic and political officer in Singapore and as an economic officer in China. He received his bachelor's degree from Stanford University and his master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Bahrain is a small Arab monarchy in the Persian Gulf. In 1991, during the Persian Gulf War, the country made its port and airfields available to the coalition forces that liberated Kuwait. Although more moderate than Saudi Arabia, Bahrain has generally followed that country's lead in most foreign policy decisions. |
