UN Day
In the spring of 1945, representatives of fifty nations gathered in San Francisco to put the final touches to a document of far-reaching consequences – the Charter of the United Nations. Enthusiastically supported by the United States, the U.N. Charter went into effect on October 24, 1945. Two years later the U.N. General Assembly adopted a U.S.-sponsored resolution declaring October 24th United Nations Day, to be commemorated annually by all member-states of the United Nations. Since 1947, U.N. Day has been observed in nations large and small around the world.

Dr. Lawrence S. Finkelstein
Dr. Lawrence S. Finkelstein, holder of three degrees from Columbia University, was in the first group of interns at the U.S. Department of State and was thus, in a sense, present at the creation of the postwar international order.

Joining the United Nations as a young professional, Dr. Finkelstein worked closely with Ralph Bunche on the drafting of the colonialism provisions of the United Nations Charter. Together they attended the preparatory Dumbarton Oaks Conversations (1944) and the San Francisco Conference (1945) which adopted the Charter. Dr. Finkelstein and Ralph Bunche took part at the 1st Session of the UN General Assembly in London. In March 1944, he joined the Secretariat Trusteeship Section, while Ralph Bunche became Director of the Trusteeship Division soon after.

In 1952, Dr. Finkelstein joined the staff of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, of which he was Vice President from 1959 to 1965. He then served in the Pentagon as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for NATO/Europe political/military affairs.

In 1966 he moved to academe, first as director of the Case Institute of Technology-Western Reserve University study that federated those two universities. During 1967 to 1969 he was Acting Dean of the Graduate School of Liberal Arts and Science at Brandeis University. From 1969 to 1973 he was Secretary and Research Associate at the Center for International Affairs of Harvard University. He then taught, until 1995, as Professor of Political Science at Northern Illinois University.

Dr. Finkelstein has been a member of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, serving two three-year terms. The United States government, after a long absence, recently has resumed its participation in that international organization.
Dr. Finkelstein has been active in the Democratic Party in New Hampshire. He also has joined the Board of Directors of the United Nations Association of Greater Boston (UNA-GB).

He is a founding member of the Ralph Bunche Centenary Commemoration Committee, and is now engaged in advancing its work in support of the ideals for which Dr. Bunche stood.
