Portrait of Dean Shane Unveiled
On Saturday May 17th, during reunion weekend, a portrait of Dean Charles
N. Shane F’58 was unveiled. It will be hung in the Reading Room of Ginn
Library.
Through the years, many alumni have asked when a portrait of Dean
Shane would be added to the august group in the Reading Room. These
inquiries stepped up after “Chuck” received the Dean’s Medal in the fall
of 1999. Last summer, Allan Cameron F’64 and Bart Nourse F’83 agreed to
spearhead an alumni effort to make the portrait a reality - a permanent
expression of the Fletcher community’s love for one of its greats.
Both Allan and Bart worked with Dean Shane and were eager to bring about
a fitting tribute to a man who truly could be called “Mr. Fletcher.” In
a letter they sent to alumni who attended Fletcher as Navy officers and
to alumni in the classes of 1965-1985, they included this paragraph.
“In a very real sense, and in countless ways, Chuck Shane gave his life
to Fletcher as student, administrator, graduate and supporter. He was
100% committed to the ideals for which the School stands. He was proud
of the students and colleagues who stood with him, and with Joy, in
support of those ideals for more than 40 years.”
At the unveiling, Jeswald W. Salacuse, former Dean and currently Henry
J. Braker Professor of Commercial Law, spoke.
