Fletcher Forum Cited in The New York Times
By Terry Ann Knopf
It is highly unusual for student publications to be cited in nationally
known newspapers. Mostly, such are considered useful exercises for the
students.
Not so for the Fletcher Forum, the
ambitious foreign affairs publication
produced by Fletcher's own students. The articles contain a mix of meaty
articles and essays written by students, academics and government
officials. Indeed, the articles are often must-reading for a wide
audience that goes far beyond the Fletcher community and includes policy
makers, journalists and serious students of international affairs.
In this instance, the Winter/Spring 2002 issue of the Forum has been
cited, first by The Washington Times, and now [March 19] by The New
York Times. The article causing public comment,
"Durban Debacle," was
written by Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.) and concerns the United Nations
World Conference in Durban, South Africa. In his analysis, Lantos
finds disturbing similarities between the hate on display there and
that which led to the Sept. 11 attacks.
