Town Meeting to be held at Fletcher School Next Mon. [9/9] to
Commemorate First Anniversary of Terrorists Attacks
MEDFORD, MASS.-- It has been a year of stunning news
developments. New
players [Osama bin Laden], new jargon [terrorist sleep cells] and
some
not-so-new issues [racial profiling] have come to the fore. On
the eve
of the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the
United
Way of Massachusetts Bay and The Fletcher School at Tufts
University are
joining forces to co-sponsor a Town Meeting on Mon, Sept. Sept.
9, from
7-8:30 p.m.
Called "The New American Profile: Eye on the 'Other,'" the
program is
billed as a conversation between a group of experts and an
audience of
300-400 persons, consisting of graduate students and interested
citizens
from the Boston area. With inclusiveness a cornerstone of the
United Way
and more than 40 percent of Fletcher student body from abroad,
topics
will include changes in our national psyche and public policy
issues
such as civil liberties, racial profiling, diversity, and
immigrant
life.
The unusual [some would say offbeat] panel will consist of:
Leila Fawaz. Director of the Fares Center for Eastern
Mediterranean
Studies Tufts University. And professor with joint
appointment at The Fletcher School and at Tufts.
Ralph Martin II. Attorney and former Suffolk County District
Attorney.
Jimmy Tingle. Political humorist and former commentator on "60
Minutes II."
Qamar-ul Huda. Assistant Professor/Islamic Studies and
Comparative
Theology, Boston
College Expert in Islamic studies.
Usmaan Ahmad. Fletcher student and political activist.

from his
days as host of "The Connection" on WBUR-FM and anchor of Ch. 2's
"Ten
O'clock News."
