Smooth Sailing for Susan Fink
PhD Student Sworn in as Navy Commander

---Terry Ann Knopf

It has been said that one picture is worth a thousand words. With this thought in mind, have included a few photos taken from the recent swearing in ceremony of Susan Fink -- a Fletcher PhD student, former White House Fellow and Lieutenant Commander officer in the US Navy -- who was promoted to Commander over the Labor Day weekend.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on September 1 on a bright, sparkling day aboard the historic USS Constitution in Charlestown Harbor. Included in the official party were Susan's father and mother, George Fink, USN (Ret.) and Joyce Fink, along other relatives, former White House Fellows, as well as Fletcher students and staff.

Following the arrival of the official party on the Quarterdeck, the Pledge of Alliance was led by Eileen Sempa, followed by the invocation by Father Bob Dougherty. The Oath of Office was administered by Capt. Steve Doyle, former CO of USS Boxer.

Susan's remarks began with a lovely quote from Albert Schweitzer who said, "Not one of us knows what effect his life produces, and what he gives to others, that is hidden…though we are often allowed to see some little fraction of it, so that we may not lose courage.”

Saying Schweitzer's words had meaning for her, she added: "How could my Dad know the impact his 31 years of faithful service would have on his two kids in the Navy? Or how could his Uncle Frank or Uncle Maury know the example they set for him by their naval service in World War II?"

Following the promotion ceremony, a joyful party was held in the Hull Room for the Wetting Down.
