A celebratory raising of the United Nations Flag on UN Day: Wednesday, October 24th, 2001

The Fletcher School and Tufts University commemorated United Nations Day with a U.N. flag-raising on the Medford/Somerville campus. Organized by Fletcher professor Alan Henrikson, a former president of the UN Association of Greater Boston. The ceremony included remarks by Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Alvaro de Soto, Tufts President Lawrence Bacow, and Fletcher School

professor Ian Johnstone. Prior to the event Johnstone, a former aide to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, commented that, the recent awarding of the Nobel Prize to Mr. Annan and the United Nations "was a vote of confidence from the Nobel Committee and the international community of what Annan and the UN can do in the next five years and beyond." Mr. de Soto carried greetings from Annan, who was Fletcher’s commencement speaker in May, and remarked on the importance of the U.N.’s ongoing efforts at peacekeeping and peacemaking, particularly in light of the attack on the World Trade Center in September. The program concluded with Tufts chaplain Patricia Budd Kepler reading from the Preamble to the United Nations Charter.
