New York Career Trip 2001

Associate Director of Career Services
Thursday, November 8 and Friday, November 9 marked another successful Fletcher New York Career Trip. During those two days 110 students, or almost one third of the total student body, descended on New York City. Part information-gathering mission and part networking opportunity, the New York Career Trip offered students the chance to meet with alumni and other professionals across a wide variety of career fields.
This year’s program more than doubled last year’s offerings and included panels and lunches in venues throughout the city. Old favorites, back by popular demand, included panels on Banking & Finance, Consulting, Foundations, NGOs & Non-profits, and the UN. New events focused specifically on the following topics:
Corporate Social Responsibility
Financial Research & Reporting
Internet & New Technologies
Marketing
Microfinance
Private International Law
Public Affairs
Public International Law
Public Relations
Publishing & Print Journalism
The addition of smaller lunches added an element of intimacy and dynamism to the program, allowing the students and professionals who attended to take part in a vivid exchange of ideas and career tips. Also, the expanded program allowed for the incorporation of more non-alumni participants, including one current GMAP student. These non-alumni brought immense added value to the events and allowed the career services staff and students to promote the Fletcher name in an important new way.
Highlights of this year’s trip included a tour of the gold vault at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, a special treat since all tours have been otherwise halted since the September 11attack. The annual Alumni/Student Reception was also noteworthy, since alumni had the chance to participate in Q&A with Fletcher’s Dean, Stephen Bosworth, and several high-profile alumni were in attendance.
In addition to the pre-arranged events, many students took advantage of being in New York to arrange informational interviews with alumni in their particular career fields of interest. Also, many students commented on the rare chance to meet and bond with many of their peers they had not previously known. Add to this the usual advantages of being in New York, with its many restaurants, museums, shows and nightclubs, and one instantly understands why the New York Trip is such a popular event!
Our sincere thanks to all the students, alumni, and non-alumni who participated and who made this such a great event.
