Murrow Center Sweeps Prestigious TPRC with Four Papers

This fall, under the leadership of Lee W. McKnight and new Executive Director Jesse Parker, the Murrow Center continues to foster a growing technology and telecommunications research tradition. At the 29th Annual Research Conference on Communication, Information and Internet Policy hosted by the prestigious Telecommunications Policy Research Conference (TPRC) in Alexandria, Virginia, Murrow Center members were the most prolific, obtaining four slots for the presentation of their research at what has become a highly competitive forum.

At the October 27-29 conference, Murrow Center head and Fletcher Associate Professor of International Communication Lee McKnight, along with Ray Linsenmayer, MALD ’01, presented Best Effort Versus Spectrum Markets; Adjunct Assistant Professor of International

Communication Shawn O’Donnell spoke on Quality of Service Monitoring: Performance Metrics across Proprietary Content Domains; Visiting Scholar G. Winfield Treese presented An Architecture for Security and Privacy in Mobile Communications; and Fletcher 2nd Year Audrey Selian tackled wireless issues in From 2G to 3G – The Evolution of International Cellular Standards.

Since this is the first year Fletcher has been so well represented among conference presenters, reports indicate the corridors were abuzz with informal questions about the Murrow Center’s work in the field. This is in keeping with McKnight’s vision for the Center, and the strategic plan he and Parker continue to put in place. According to McKnight, “I was very pleased to see the positive reception the research work of Fletcher students, visiting scholars, and faculty received at TPRC. This is the premier conference for communications, information and Internet policy, attracting policymakers and leading academics from schools of law, business, and computer science among others, from around the world. Just getting a single paper on the program of this prestigious interdisciplinary conference is an accomplishment, never mind four. Fletcher definitely made its presence felt!”

The TPRC hosts its annual round-table for researchers examining issues related to telecommunications technology and information policy, whether they function in the academic, public- or private-sector environments. The conference is intended to bring decision makers up-to-date on the best of recent research in the area, while also acquainting scholars with the information requirements of policy makers.
