MALD – A Tradition of Excellence

The largest degree program at Fletcher, the Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) is the School’s keystone degree, enrolling more than 180 students each year.

Since its inception, the two-year MALD program has graduated leaders the world over—from heads of state and ambassadors to renowned figures in politics, international law, non-profit, business and global institutions.

The MALD program is preparing the next generation of world leaders for a 21st century filled with profound challenges. From the reconstruction of post-conflict societies and the creation of competitive markets in emerging economies to the analysis of terror threats and the promotion of human rights, today’s issues become the topics of study for our MALD students.

Alongside our other program participants, MALD students learn from leaders in global issues—our faculty—who are preeminent voices in climate change, international law, counter-terrorism, central Asia and the Middle East, global economics, security and many other areas of interest.

Students have access to The Fletcher School’s numerous academic centers and programs that feature speaker events, conferences and symposiums tackling the hottest of issues. Topics of discussion range from microfinance and human rights to espionage and cultural change.

Connecting theory and practice, the MALD program trains broadly knowledgeable and curious leaders to develop a thorough and nuanced grounding in the latest political, economic, business and legal thinking and translate it into practical, successful actions that shape international issues and events. The flexibility of the program ensures that its students can tailor their education to particular interests and encourages them to explore their interests from new perspectives.
