One full academic year, with four courses each semester, is required for the LL.M. degree. One of the eight courses must be a seminar or independent study project with a substantial writing component in order to fulfill the thesis requirement. A minimum of five of the eight courses, and a maximum of six, should be in the International Law and Organizations (ILO) division. At least one of the eight courses should be from the Diplomacy, History, and Politics (DHP) division, and at least one course should be taken from the Economics and International Business (EIB) division. LL.M. students may also cross-register at the Harvard Law School for one course per year. The same language requirement applicable for a MALD degree applies with respect to the LL.M. degree.
We expect students admitted to be mature professionals who wish to obtain specialized education in a particular area of international law. Therefore, we believe it inappropriate to impose required courses. However, LL.M. students may follow three optional curricular tracks within the law curriculum. These tracks include (i) Public International Law, (ii) International Business Law, and (iii) International Economic Law.
