Summer 2006 Highlights

Hilary Sienrukos and Colleen Traughber spent the summer working at US Embassies in the Caucasus, Hilary in Azerbaijan and Colleen in Georgia. On July 22, they met in Tbilisi to compare their experiences living at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. They took an excursion up the Georgian Military Highway, where they stopped at Ananuri, a 16th Century fortress, which formerly housed the dukes of Aragvi. It is a well-preserved example of architecture from the period with walls, cupola, and defense towers that remain greatly in tact. Instead of a village in the Aragvi River valley, it now overlooks the Zhinvali reservoir. Ananuri still proves to be a scenic lookout point.

Colleen Traughber spent the summer in Tbilisi, Georgia, interning first at the Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC) and then in the Political/Economic Section of the US Embassy. In Georgia, she investigated the threats from arms, drug, and human trafficking and focused on the links between terrorism and trafficking in the Caucasus. Combined with corruption, both terrorism and trafficking threaten Georgian sovereignty and state security. Even in the aftermath of the Rose Revolution (November 2003), corruption continues to be a problem endemic to the Georgian government.

Colleen’s adventures did not stop in the workplace: She hiked, rafted, and swam her way through Georgia. Weekend trips included hiking into the mountains near Kazbegi, rafting on the Aragvi River near Chargali, and swimming in the Black Sea off of Batumi (to name just a few). During her two-month stay in Georgia, she dabbled in the art of toast-making at various supras (Georgian feasts). She did her best to counter the Russian embargo against Georgian water and wine. Colleen describes Georgian hospitality as “second to none” and one of the regions most well-preserved cultural characteristics.

» Josh Gleis took traveled through California this summer. During his trek he visited Joshua Tree National Park where he posed with a Joshua tree and made a successful attempt at rock climbing (No belaying! Very brave!). He later visited Sequoia National park and posed next to the ominous “General Sherman”, the tallest tree in the world!
