Andrea J. Dew, Jebsen Center Senior Fellow for Counter-Terrorism Studies

Andrea J. Dew is a Jebsen Center Senior Fellow for Counter-Terrorism Studies and an Assistant Professor of Strategy and Policy at the Naval War College, Newport, RI. She is also a Research Fellow in the International Security Program at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. She earned her MALD and Ph.D. from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. From 2003–2006, she was the Research Associate for the International Security Studies Program at The Fletcher School and co-authored a book on armed groups with Dr. Richard H. Shultz, Jr. entitled: Insurgents, Terrorists, and Militias: The Warriors of Contemporary Combat (Columbia University Press, 2006). The book has been widely reviewed in national publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, RUSI, Marine Corps Gazette, and Parameters. Dr. Dew has also appeared as an analyst on NECN and PBS, and as a guest author and political commentator on NPR and BBC.

Dr. Dew is currently working on several research projects focusing on armed groups, counterinsurgency and counter-terrorism, the psychology of unconventional conflict, and the use of geo-spatial technologies in unconventional conflict. Her recent publications include: “Irregular Warfare, Armed Groups, and the Long War: A New Framework for Analysis,” in Economics and Maritime Security: Implications for the 21st Century, (Naval War College, Newport, RI, 2006); and, with Mohammad-Mahmoud Mohamedou, Empowered Groups, Tested Laws, and Policy Options (Harvard University, Cambridge, 2007).
