Kyle Dietrich

Internship - Conflict Prevention, Democracy, and Governance Division, Africa Bureau, USAID, Washington, DC

During the summer of 2007 Kyle worked in Washington, DC; first at the Eurasia Foundation then in the Africa Bureau of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

At the Eurasia Foundation, he conducted research and generated three documents aimed at improving the Foundation's understanding of and ability to work successfully in post-Niyazov Turkmenistan.

At USAID, Kyle worked as a Research Analyst in a technical division within the Africa Bureau, which was responsible for working a the US government interagency level on the role of strengthening development assistance in conflict prevention, democracy/governance, and counter-terrorism efforts in Africa.

Kyle was involved in a number of conferences and working groups that aimed to streamline and strengthen USAID involvement in military-dominated sructures such as US Africa Command (AfRICOM), the Combined Joint Task Force in the Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA, and the Trans-Saharan Counter-Terrorism Partnership (TSCTP).

Kyle worked on several reports, literature reviews, and targeted analyses during his time at USAID. These included the following subjects: gender dynamics and the role of women in terrorism and counter-terrorism, GSPC-AQIM activity, Africa's Authoritarian Leaders, Africa population growth, examination of Rule of Law programs in Africa, and a review of Africa counter-terrorism literature, and regular analysis of current events.

 

Biography

Kyle worked as a Human Rights Officer with the UN Peacekeeping mission in Burundi prior to Fletcher. He also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Turkmenistan, and worked in international development in Washington, DC with Chemonics International Inc. and the World Bank. His studies at The Fletcher School(and career interests post-Fletcher) are focused on peace building in countries in transition, including conflict resolution, social healing, institution building, rule of law, transitional justice, and international cooperation, primarily in Central Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
