Preparing Leaders with a Global Perspective

Welcome!

Walrus

Established in 1990 to support the growing demand for international environmental leaders, the Center for Environmental and Resource Policy (CIERP) provides an interdisciplinary approach to educate graduate students at The Fletcher School. The program integrates emerging science, engineering, and business concepts with more traditional subjects such as economics, international law and policy, negotiation, diplomacy, resource management and governance systems. Our students develop appreciation for the complex nature of formulating effective environmental strategies and solutions. Upon graduation, students are prepared to apply this new diplomatic approach in the context of government and intergovernmental organizations, multinational corporations, and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Scaling Alternative Energy: The Role of Emerging Markets

On April 11, 2008, CIERP and the Center for Emerging Market Enterprises (CEME), co-hosted a Dialogue on scaling alternative energy in emerging markets to promote and provoke open interchange on how to address climate change concerns and energy needs through alternative energy products and technologies. The dialogue brought together leading manufacturers and investors in alternative energy products and technologies, as well as practitioners and policy-makers. For more information about the event, please visit the Scaling Alternative Energy website or read the feature in Fletcher News. In the next few days we will be updating this website to feature photographs of the event, the conference report, and PowerPoint slides of some of the Dialogue presentations.

New Forest Fellowship

CIERP is pleased to announce a new Fellowship for students interested in international forest issues: the UNFF-Netherlands Fellowship. It was established by the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature, and Food Quality (LNV) in honor of the work of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF). LNV will fund the Fletcher School’s Center for International Environment and Resource Policy (CIERP) with an annual grant of 25,000 Euro over the course of four years to support one or two Fletcher students who have a demonstrated interest in international forest issues.

“We have to ensure the involvement of our next generation of leaders and decision-makers of the world in the work of the Forum. The UNFF-Netherlands Fellowship is a step in that direction. The Fellowship will provide students from all over the world the opportunity to pursue studies in the field of international forest policy, contributing not only to the stock of scholarly work in this field, but also generating energy, passion and new ideas from those people who dare to challenge conventional thinking when it comes to UNFF.” - Mr. Hans Hoogeveen MPA, Director General, the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

The first recipient of the UNFF-Netherlands Fellowship is Mr. Arona Soumare, who will be starting the Fletcher GMAP program this spring. Mr. Soumare is currently the Programme Manager for the WWF West Africa in Senegal.
