
Mr. Hans Hoogeveen has recently been appointed as Visiting Professor of Practice in Natural Resource Policy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
In 2007, Mr. Hoogeveen was appointed by the Dutch Cabinet of Ministers as Director General at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, responsible for International Affairs, Research and Development, Innovation Policy and implementation of European Union policies.
Recently, Mr. Hoogeveen served as President of the Seventh Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests that adopted in 2007, under his leadership, an international instrument on forests after fifteen years of stalled international negotiations. For his achievements within the Forum, Mr. Hoogeveen received an UN award during the High-Level Special Event on the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the international forest instrument. Before that, he also served, amongst others, as President of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
In his capacity as Director General at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Mr. Hoogeveen is currently also leading a Dutch Task Force on agriculture for post-war reconstruction in Uruzgan, Afghanistan. Furthermore, Mr. Hoogeveen is the Senior Advisor on Water and Food Security issues to the Royal Crown Prince of the Netherlands in his role as Chair of a High-Level CSD panel. Besides his government affiliation, Mr. Hoogeveen serves on several Boards in the field of sustainable development, including the Sustainability Challenge Foundation in the Netherlands and Forest Trends, a leading International NGO on innovative natural resource policy in Washington, D.C. Mr. Hoogeveen has published several articles on natural resource policy and is currently co-authoring with Professor Moomaw, Professor Najam and Mr. Verkooijen, Senior Fellow at Fletcher, a book on sustainable development governance and diplomacy. Mr. Hoogeveen is a regular guest speaker in Master Classes and seminars at various universities in the Netherlands and the United States on a broad range of sustainable development issues.
Mr. Hoogeveen received his masters degree in International Law and also received a masters degree in Public Administration. More recently, he finished a Senior Managers in Government program at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
