Preparing Leaders with a Global Perspective

UNFF-Netherlands Fellowship at The Fletcher School

In honor of the work of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature, and Food Quality (LNV) is establishing the UNFF-Netherlands Fellowship. LNV will fund the Fletcher School’s Center for International Environment and Resource Policy (CIERP) with an annual grant of 25,000 Euro over the course of four years to support one or two Fletcher students per year who have a demonstrated interest in international forest issues.

UNFF was founded in 2000 to promote “the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and to strengthen long-term political commitment to this end.” Currently, the UNFF is focused on sustainable forest management (SFM) and the wide range of political, social, and economic issues associated with SFM implementation. At its seventh session in 2007, UNFF adopted a non-legally binding instrument on all types of forests and a multi-year program of work for the period 2007-2015.

Students who are planning to conduct research in international forest policy, preferably related to issues concerning UNFF, are especially encouraged to apply. Fellowships will be awarded based on demonstrated interest and research objectives. We encourage applications from women, minorities, and citizens of all countries.

Application is open to current MALD, MA, GMAP, and PhD candidates of the Fletcher School. Grant recipients will be chosen by the Fellowship Advisory Board. The Board currently consists of Hans Hoogeveen, Director General of LNV, Patrick Verkooijen, Senior Research Fellow at Fletcher, and Professor William Moomaw, CIERP Director. Grants will be announced during the biennial UNFF sessions. Research resulting from the UNFF-Netherlands Fellowship could be presented at upcoming UNFF sessions.

Fellowship applicants must indicate that they are applying to the UNFF-Netherlands Fellowship. The application deadline is December 15 of each year. Awards will be distributed the following January. Any questions related to grants, application procedures, and deadlines should be directed to Mieke van der Wansem of the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy at Mieke.Wansem@tufts.edu.
