Peter J. Kennedy

Senior Manager, Deloitte Consulting

Peter Kennedy is a Senior Manager in the Boston Office of Deloitte Consulting. Mr. Kennedy joined the firm in November 1998, when Deloitte Consulting acquired The Futures Group (TFG), a consulting boutique specializing in long-term planning and strategy development. Mr. Kennedy was a consultant with TFG for nine years during which time he founded the Emerging Markets practice and played a leadership role in the successful development and expansion of the Scenario Planning practice area.

As a senior practitioner at Deloitte Consulting, Mr. Kennedy has responsibility for marketing and delivering strategic services for government and private sector clients. Much of this work is based on scenario planning, a tool developed at The Futures Group. Mr. Kennedy has previously delivered scenario planning services to clients in the automotive, air transportation, healthcare, financial services, telecommunications, and shipping industries. His government clients include the U.S. Coast Guard and NASA Aeronautics.

Mr. Kennedy managed a 1997 Futures Group engagement to help the future management of the Panama Canal prepare for eventual transfer of ownership and operating authority from the U.S. The Executive Planning Department of the Commission hired The Futures Group to develop a set of planning scenarios for the future of global transportation (with specific attention to the maritime component) set in a very long-term time frame. The results contributed directly to the formation of a strategic agenda for the new Canal leadership. Additionally, the exercise created executive alignment around feasibility plans for a third set of Canal locks and lanes.

Other recent client engagements include:
· Creating business recovery scenarios for a large New York financial institution and facilitating strategy workshops for the client’s senior management team
· Co-directing a strategic review and re-valuation of a financial service company’s three-year plan, based on new information and changes in the firm’s competitive and external environment
· Managing a long-term assessment of China’s strengths and strategic ambitions, based on economic and political scenarios developed by Deloitte Consulting
· Directing a cross-modal transportation trend study sponsored by NASA and the U.S. transportation enterprise

Prior to joining The Futures Group, Mr. Kennedy spent six years with The Economist Group, where he served as a country analyst, editor, and finally, manager of proprietary research for the Americas region.

Mr. Kennedy holds an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in History from Le Moyne College. He has written extensively on planning, strategy and emerging markets issues for such publications as Journal of Business Strategy, Directors and Boards, and Business Latin America. Mr. Kennedy has appeared on national news programs, including CNN’s Money Line and Bloomberg’s Financial News.

Mr. Kennedy speaks frequently on scenario planning and has extensive experience running scenario-based strategy workshops, including at Stanford University’s graduate business school and at Ford Motor Company’s Executive Development Center.
