Submission Guidelines

Many of the articles published by The Fletcher Forum of World Affairs are solicited directly by the editors, but authors are also encouraged to submit unsolicited writing for consideration by the editorial board.

The Fletcher Forum of World Affairs accepts submissions twice during the year: between August 15 and September 15 for publication in the winter volume, and between January 1 and February 1 for publication in the summer volume.

Manuscripts should be submitted via e-mail (forum@tufts.edu) to the attention of the editor-in-chief.

Manuscripts should be formatted as Microsoft Word documents, and citations should be included as endnotes, in accordance with The Chicago Manual of Style. The editorial staff does not conduct systematic fact checks and relies on authors to ensure the accuracy of their statements. Submissions that neglect these guidelines will require undue editorial attention and will likely be returned to authors for revision.

Feature Length: In-depth articles offer research and critical analysis of topics that deal with international affairs. Feature length articles range in length from 3,000 to 8,000 words. For the purposes of submission, unsolicited articles should be summarized in an abstract of no more than 150 words.

Perspectives: “Perspectives” articles use concrete examples and practitioner expertise to offer reflections, opinions, and recommendations about contemporary issues in international affairs. “Perspectives” articles range in length from 1,200 to 2,000 words, and citations are typically not necessary.

Book Reviews: Book reviews offer informed critiques of recently released books that deal with international affairs. Book reviews are not more than 1,800 words in length.

Letters to the Editor: Letters for publication should be no longer than 550 words, must refer to the article and volume in question, and must include the author’s contact information. Editors reserve the right to edit for length and clarity.

Graphics: Photographs, maps, and other graphics accompanying an article must be submitted as TIFF, JPEG, or EPS files, at a minimum of 300 dpi at 100 percent. Image files must be sent separately rather than imbedded in the text.

Submission Review Process

Each article submitted to The Fletcher Forum of World Affairs is reviewed by an editorial board, which is composed entirely of graduate students enrolled in The Fletcher School. Articles are judged on the basis of relevance, originality, prose, and argumentation. The editor-in-chief, in consultation with the editorial board, holds final authority for accepting or refusing individual articles for publication.

Throughout the editorial and design processes, editors reserve the right to make changes in accordance with Forum style specifications; and the editorial board assumes no obligation regarding publication. Copyright of published articles remains with The Fletcher Forum of World Affairs, and no article in its entirety or a part thereof may be published in any form without written permission.
