Building Bridges:
Overcoming Barriers to Peaceful International Relations

Friday, April 14th, 2006

Concept:

As followers of global affairs, we can be overwhelmed by the negativity of events around the world. Events and dynamics such as conflict, natural disasters, gender stereotyping, and institutional memory often appear to have roots so deep they seem insurmountable. Unquestionably, today’s international community faces challenges that limit our ability to effectively approach global issues. It is often in the face of such restraints, however, that human ingenuity has most fertile ground. By highlighting current strategies to overcome institutional, structural and natural barriers to global harmonization, the third annual Fletcher Conference on Innovative Approaches aims to facilitate a cross-disciplinary dialogue focused on building bridges from where we are to where we want to be.

Conference Structure:

The conference will address specific topics by combining panels and discussions. Various Fletcher student groups have sponsored the panels, each one developed to address innovative approaches to overcoming institutional, structural, or natural barriers within their respective fields. The panels will include academics and practitioners with relevant experience. Where possible, panelists will react to the papers presented in conjunction with the conference.
