DEAN'S DISCRETIONARY FUND

The Dean’s Discretionary Fund was established through a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. A portion of the income from this fund will be devoted to the general purpose of faculty development. In the past, this fund was utilized in a variety of ways including support for faculty to attend and present papers at professional conferences, for lectures, and for research support, among others. Approximately, $25,000 will be allocated for these purposes in each year. This amount is in addition to the annual allowance granted each faculty member.

The guidelines applicable to the distribution of these funds are as follows:

PERSONS ELIGIBLE: Members of the Executive Faculty.

PURPOSE: Eligible uses of the fund include professional travel (for conferences, workshops, etc.), research assistance, and other professional development expenses. All expenditures should be made according to University guidelines.

APPLICATION: Faculty members should submit a memorandum to the Dean identifying the purpose and justification for the professional development activity and the amount required. Normally, priority of support for professional travel will be given to faculty who present papers, organize panels, or act as discussants at conferences and workshops. If a faculty member has access to other sponsored program funds (soft money), those funds should be exhausted before requesting support from the faculty development fund.

TIMING: Requests should be submitted before the end of September for allocation during the academic year. A small amount will be reserved for unplanned activities that occur during the second semester.
