Dan Maxwell

Dan Maxwell joined the Feinstein International Center at Tufts University in 2006 to lead the Food Security and Livelihoods research program and teach courses in the same area. From March 2007, he is the Principal Investigator in a study in partnership with Transparency International titled “Corruption in the Humanitarian Aid Endeavor.” Prior to joining the Center, he was the Deputy Regional Director for CARE International in Eastern and Central Africa, based in Nairobi. In addition to his primary responsibility for the oversight of Country Offices, he was responsible for program development, disaster preparedness and emergency response in ten countries in the Great Lakes and the Greater Horn of Africa. Before joining CARE in 1998, he worked for the International Food Policy Research Institute and the Land Tenure Center, and worked for Mennonite Central Committee for ten years in Tanzania and Uganda early in his career. His recent research has focused on the capacity and performance of humanitarian agencies, as well as food security, famine, chronic vulnerability, and humanitarian response in complex emergencies. Dan has held Fulbright and Rockefeller Fellowships. He is the co-author, with Chris Barrett of Cornell University, of the recent book, Food Aid After Fifty Years: Recasting Its Role (2005), which has already had far-ranging impacts on food aid practice and policy. He holds a B.Sc. Degree from Wilmington College, a Master's Degree from Cornell, and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin.
