About al Nakhlah
Al Nakhlah is The Fletcher School's online journal on Southwest Asia and Islamic Civilization. Al Nakhlah, which is Arabic for date palm, features thoughtful and informative articles and editorials by Fletcher students and alumni.
Published once per semester, Al Nakhlah is sponsored by The Fletcher School's Program for Southwest Asia and Islamic Civilization (SWAIC). The journal seeks to step beyond the traditional Middle East policy approach and embrace the broader range of political, economic, and cultural aspects of the larger Southwest Asian region--a region that spans the Eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia and the Sinai Peninsula in the West, covers the Arab heartland, the Caucasus and Central Asia, and reaches as far east as Iran, Pakistan, and the Gulf Region. Al Nakhlah is the first online journal established by graduate students of international affairs that focuses on this particular region.
About SWAIC - Program on Southwest Asia and Islamic Civilization
The primary goal of this program is to imbue students with a multi-disciplinary approach in analyzing the political, economic, cultural and social conditions of Southwest Asia in order to prepare Fletcher graduates to successfully assume leadership positions in both the public and private sectors in this ever changing region of the world. This professional approach to education coupled with additional activities outside of the classroom that include guest lectures, intellectual discussions, trips and diplomatic training programs continue to make the program one of the most informative, academically stimulating and popular at The Fletcher School. Students of the program come from a wide variety of backgrounds from locations in every corner of the globe after having held positions in government, international business, and academia. This eclectic mix certainly make discussions in and out of the classroom rewarding and extremely thought provoking, thus ultimately providing students with a "Global Perspective."

Contributions
Al Nakhlah welcomes contributions from all Fletcher students and alumni. Each issue will include 5-8 carefully researched, clearly written articles between 2,500 and 3,500 words in length that offer unique insight on issues of importance for the Southwest Asian region, including the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
Submissions must be students' original work and must be meticulously referenced according to the Chicago Manual of Style. Al Nakhlah will assume first copyrights for all published articles.
Al Nakhlah may also include book reviews, photographs, and essays contributed by members of The Fletcher community.
Scholarships for Outstanding Contributions
Each student or alumni article submission will be eligible for a cash scholarship award of $500 or $250. Editorial Board members will select winners based on topical relevance to current events, author's originality of thought, clarity of expression, and quality of writing.
