Fletcher Scholarship List

Named scholarships and fellowships have been established by benefactors of The Fletcher School. Unless otherwise noted in the fellowship description, all applicants requesting scholarship assistance are automatically considered for these awards. Applicants need only submit the required financial included in the application for admission. No other forms are necessary nor are special applications required.


Charles Francis Adams Scholarships

Charles F. Adams, Chairman of The Fletcher School Board of Visitors (1971-91), established these scholarships to provide financial aid to worthy Fletcher students and to encourage high standards of scholarship among students at The Fletcher School.


The Atlantic Community Fellowship

This fellowship was established as a memorial to the late Theodore C. Achilles. This distinguished diplomat and ambassador’s career with the foreign service of the United States spanned more than 30 years. Achilles also made key contributions to the achievement of the North Atlantic Pact. After retirement, he continued to serve as chairman of the Atlantic Council.


The Marie Baier Fellowship

Established by the Marie Baier Foundation, this fellowship provides support for a student from Germany and is awarded solely on the basis of merit.


The Frank Rockwell Barnett Fellowships

These fellowships were established in memory of Frank Rockwell Barnett, recognizing his professionalism and commitment to international security education. Funded by the Sarah Scaife Foundation, the fellowships are awarded to outstanding students enrolled in international security studies courses.


The Ruhl J. Bartlett Scholarship

This scholarship was established by former students, colleagues and friends of Ruhl Jacob Bartlett, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Diplomatic History at The Fletcher School.


The William L. Blue and Joan R. Blue Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed with a gift from the estate of William Blue, F’39, a career foreign service officer who served in Venezuela, Kuala Lumpur, Italy, New Delhi, Bern, and as deputy chief of Mission in Lisbon. He was given the French Legion of Honor with the rank of Chevalier in 1976.


The M.A. Edward Bunford Scholarship

Mrs. Claude Bunford, A’90P, and member of the Tufts University International Board of Overseers, established this scholarship in memory of her late husband to provide financial assistance to a Fletcher student of demonstrated ability and need.


The John Moors Cabot Fellowships

These fellowships are supported by gifts from the Cabot family and other donors. The award was named in honor of the late John Moors Cabot, former career foreign service officer, former ambassador to Sweden, Colombia, Brazil, and Poland, and former lecturer at The Fletcher School.


The Cabot Corporation Scholarship

Gifts from the Cabot Corporation Foundation endowed this scholarship to provide financial aid to worthy Fletcher students and to encourage high standards of scholarship.


The Antonio Cardozo Alumni Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in memory of a member of the first class of The Fletcher School. A native of the Cape Verde Islands, Tony Cardozo practiced law in Boston, where he specialized in international law and handled legal work for consulates in the area. He continued to be involved in the life of the School, attending every Fletcher commencement from 1934 until his death in 1984.


The Citicorp Wriston Scholarships

These scholarships were endowed with a grant from Citicorp to honor its former President and Chairman, Walter B. Wriston, F’42. Five awards are made each year to students of the highest character, integrity, scholarship, and all-around ability. Preference will be given to students with strong interests in international business and the problems and opportunities of the global marketplace.


The Andreas A. David Scholarship

This scholarship supports an MA or MALD student(s) from any nation, with preference for Greeks and Cypriots, interested in pursuing a career in conflict resolution, international negotiation and/or diplomacy.


The Phyllis E. and C. Douglas Dillon Fellowship

This fellowship was established by the friends of Mr. And Mrs. Dillon. Mr. Dillon, a distinguished American statesman, has served his country as Ambassador to France, Undersecretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury, and as Chairman of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.


The Samuel J. Elder Scholarship Fund

This fund was endowed with a bequest from Samuel J. Elder’s sister to provide scholarships for students who would not otherwise be able to afford the benefits of an education at The Fletcher School.


The Benjamin and Alice Finn Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been made possible through the generosity of friends of the University and is awarded periodically to a Fletcher student.


The Carl J. Gilbert Scholarship

This scholarship has been endowed as a memorial to the late Carl J.Gilbert, a loyal supporter of Tufts University and The Fletcher School and member of the Tufts Board of Trustees. The scholarship helps support students from Tufts University who have been accepted into the combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program at The Fletcher School.


The Joan Gillespie Fellowship

This fellowship is for outstanding students with demonstrated financial need. It is provided by Mr. And Mrs. Kingsley Gillespie in memory of their daughter, and by Mr. Kenyon Gillespie in memory of his sister, Dr. Joan Gillespie, who received a PhD degree from The Fletcher School. Preference will be given to women and men who are Algerians, African-Americans, and Native-Americans.


The Armand Hammer Fellowship

This fellowship is endowed with a grant from the Armand Hammer Foundation to fund an ongoing study of the United World College movement in establishing peace in the world.


George B. and Helen J. Hargens Scholarship Fund

Established by George B. and Helen J. Hargens, two-year, full tuition scholarships are awarded to deserving students on the basis of exceptional academic achievement, a strong commitment to the field of international affairs, and financial need.

In addition, this fund provides partial scholarships for deserving students with preference given to US citizens with academic credentials from the University of California, Berkeley.


The Joseph Harrison-Francis H. Russell Fellowships

These fellowships are for advanced study in international law and international organizations at The Fletcher School, particularly as related to the preservation of peace and the peaceful resolution of conflict.


John L. Hedges Fellowship in Public Diplomacy

Established by the family and friends of John L. Hedges, this fellowship is awarded to a second-year student interested in pursuing a career in public diplomacy, preferably with the United States Information Agency.


The Richard D. and Polly B. Hill Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Richard D. Hill, a member of The Fletcher School Board of Visitors, and his wife to assist a student of demonstrated ability and need.


The Asher Hobson Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Asher Hobson, a 1931 graduate of the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, to provide tuition assistance to students from the institute who study at The Fletcher School under the auspices of the Geneva Exchange Program.


The A. Elken Hohenberg Scholarship

Julien J. Hohenberg, F’58, and his family established this scholarship to assist a worthy mid-career student.


The Roger Long Scholarship

This scholarship is for a deserving Fletcher student.


The Emily Sears and Henry Cabot Lodge Fellowship

This fellowship was established by friends of Mrs. Lodge and the late senator. Senator Lodge devoted a lifetime of service to the United States as senator from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Ambassador to the Republic of Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany, former Special Envoy to The Holy See, and Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations.


The Mary Pillsbury Lord Fellowships

Through the generosity of The Honorable Winston Lord, F’60, and Bette Bao Lord, F’60, these fellowships were established in honor of the late Mary Pillsbury Lord to recognize her service to the cause of international cooperation and understanding. These fellowships are awarded to encourage and assist students of exceptional promise and character aspiring to careers in the public service with government or international organizations.


The MacJannet Fellowships

Mrs. MacJannet and the late Dr. Donald R. MacJannet established these fellowships for students from Europe and for exchange students between The Fletcher School and the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.


The Lester Martin Fellowships

These fellowships were made possible by a contribution from the Martin Foundation, Inc., in memory of Lester Martin. The fellowships are awarded on the basis of scholarship and character.


The Jeffrey C. Metzel Scholarship

The Jeffrey C. Metzel Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 to honor the memory of Jeffrey C. Metzel.  Jeff received his M.A.L.D. and Ph.D. from The Fletcher School in 1981 and 1985, respectively. He was raised in a missionary family in Africa and devoted his life to working with people in developing countries.  Jeff was killed in a tragic plane crash off the coast of West Africa in January 2000.  Classmates Robert Steck (F'81) and B. Lynn Salinger (F'83) co-led the effort to create this fund, the proceeds from which provide a scholarship to a second-year student studying international development.


The Sherry Mueller Scholarship Fund

LeRoy E. Mueller established this fund in honor of his daughter, Dr. Sherry Mueller, F’66, to provide a scholarship for a second-year student of public diplomacy. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student with an expressed interest in the field of education and cultural diplomacy.


The National Chengchi University Fellowships

Endowed with a grant from the National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan, these fellowships are awarded annually to Fletcher students who are either from Taiwan or who are studying East Asian and Pacific Affairs.


The Frank C. and Christel W. Nichols Scholarship Fund

This fund was established by a bequest from the late Mrs. Nichols to support a scholarship at The Fletcher School. The scholarship is limited to US citizens with preference given to women residents of Massachusetts.


The Offer Family Scholarships

Mr. Charles S. Offer established this scholarship to support an upperclass Tufts student who is majoring in international relations, has financial need, demonstrates a commitment to world peace and public service, and has been accepted for further study at The Fletcher School, either in the combined degree program or in regular admission.


The John C. Perry Fellowship

This fellowship is in honor of Fletcher professor John Perry, Henry Willard Denison Professor of Japanese History. The fellowship is for a second year student in residence at The Fletcher School who has an abiding interest in Northeast Asia and who plans to engage in nonprofit work.


The Peurifoy Fellowship

In honor of the late John E. Peurifoy, United States Ambassador to Thailand, this fellowship is awarded to a Thai national preparing for a career in government service. An applicant must be under 30 years of age and have an undergraduate degree in law, political science, or economics.


The Manuel Quezon Fellowship Fund

This fund, established by a Philippine Foundation grant, provides support to Fletcher students from the Philippines or other ASEAN countries, or to Fletcher students from other world regions who are interested in studying the East Asian and Pacific region.


The Rak Fellowship

This fellowship supports a student at The Fletcher School who is interested in International Medicine.


The John Roche Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of former Fletcher professor John Roche for a deserving Fletcher student.


The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund

Established by the Nippon Foundation in cooperation with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, this fellowship supports students with high potential for future leadership in international affairs in public life as well as in private endeavors.


C.V. Starr Scholarship Funds

This scholarship was endowed with a gift from The Starr Foundation in memory of the Foundation’s founder, the late C.V. Starr.


The Somerville Pickney Tuck Memorial Fellowship

Established in memory of the late Ambassador Tuck, this fellowship every year provides assistance to a worthy individual or individuals enrolled at The Fletcher School, whose character and achievement give exceptional promise of a successful career or careers in international affairs.


The Theodore Xanthaky and Dorothy Osborne Xanthaky Scholarship

This fund supports Brazilian and Portuguese students at Fletcher.


The Alfonso T. Yuchengco Fellowship

This fellowship named after Alfonso T. Yuchengco, Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations, supports Fletcher students from the Philippines or Southeast Asia.
