Fields of Study

The Field of Study is the basic building block of the Fletcher curriculum. These areas of specialization or concentration are the School's "depth" requirement. Fields enable you to develop a specific set of skills related to a functional topic or geographic area. Field requirements are often completed by taking courses in more than one division (ILO, DHP, EIB). For example, MALD students are required to graduate with two Fields of Study, and Ph.D. students must complete three (MA students are not required to present Fields of Study, though many do). Below you will find a comprehensive listing of course requirements for our Fields of Study.

By combining courses taken at Fletcher, Tufts, Harvard and other institutions, you may also create your own specialized Field of Study. Recent examples of these student-created concentrations include: International Human Rights, International Migration and Refugee Studies, and Private Sector Development. Specialized fields are subject to approval by a faculty committee and are coordinated by the student and the academic adviser. Students often pursue geographic areas of concentration such as Africa, Latin America, or Southeast Asia Area Studies within the context of our functional fields.
